know your options

Whether you are an injured worker worried about losing your job or someone concerned about the declining health of a parent, you deserve to know your legal options. As an attorney, I’m here to show you those options.

My name is William Carlan.

My practice areas include: Workers’ Compensation, Wills and Trusts, Guardianships and Conservatorships, and Business Law. That’s just how I spend most of my time. If you have a question that doesn’t fit one of those categories, I’ll still be glad to talk with you. If I can’t help you, I’ll be sure to put you in touch with an experienced, trusted attorney who can.

Everyone is scared of the unknown.  I don’t believe it should cost you anything to know your options, which is why I don’t charge a consultation fee.  After talking with me, you’ll have peace of mind knowing what options are available - and which are not.

I do not rely on staff or paralegals to handle your case for me. When you put your trust in me, I believe in being your resource. Therefore, when you call Carlan Law, you talk with me, William Carlan.

INJURED WORKERS

I help injured workers navigate the minefield of the Georgia workers’ compensation system. A workers’ compensation claim comes with deadlines and rules that can take away your rights. You need to  know how to protect them. I know how to do that. I will ensure that you receive the maximum compensation available, both in money and the level of patient care. Your employer doesn’t have to look out for you. The insurance company isn’t going to look out for you. There isn’t even a rule that they have to tell you  about your rights when you get hurt. You need someone to stand with you to make sure that you get the care you are entitled to receive. You shouldn’t have to become an expert in Georgia Workers’ Compensation law to have a successful case. You need an expert like me to guide you to the best outcome possible.

WILLS & TRUSTS

Do you need a Will? What will happen to your property when you pass away? Willing to bet your life on it? There doesn’t need to be any stress. I can help you put your wishes in writing, protect your assets, and protect your loved ones from someone trying to go against your wishes. Know your options. Whether you need your Will reviewed because it has been a while or you just moved to Georgia, I’m happy to show you your options. The same goes for trusts. They can be tricky - entire classes in law school are dedicated to wills and trusts. I’ve been drafting them my entire career. I have the experience to show you how to protect what you’ve worked so hard to earn.

PROBATE COURT

When someone has passed away, whether they have a Last Will and Testament or not, there are rules about what happens to their assets. The language is strange. Probate in Solemn Form? Administration? What is available to you? If you need to know your rights, I‘m here to guide you through the requirements of the Georgia Probate Courts. The Probate Court also handles guardianships and conservatorships of adults and minors. If you or your family need to know more about these highly technical areas of the law, I can guide you with compassion and understanding.

BUSINESS LAW

Business owners are the backbone of the national economy. What kind of business is best? An LLC? A Corporation? You need an attorney who can lead you through the process of opening a business in Georgia. Need to record a trade name? Don’t know what a trade name is? I can help you with both. I can also help you organize your business, prepare your by-laws, and team you up with certified public accountants and financial managers who will ensure that you stay on the right side of the law with Uncle Sam and Aunt Georgia. When the time comes to dissolve your business and cash-out, I am here to help you avoid any penalties or fines that are common pitfalls for owners trying to wind up their business.

Will handled my work comp case. As a result of his dedication and hard work we had an excellent outcome. We were up against a very large employer-

Will never lost his confidence in our case and was on top of things right to the end. I was always informed of my cases status and the necessary steps to move forward. Calls and emails were always returned in a timely manner.

Will is very professional, hard working and fair. I would highly recommend him for any work comp case.

Mr. Carlan remained steadfast and positive during an “uphill battle” with a large school system. He was very supportive and encouraging during the entire process and worked diligently toward our positive verdict. I recommend Mr. Carlan without hesitation.

William helped manage all the intricate details of managing my father’s fight with Alzheimer’s and the eventual estate questions. Very patient, returns calls and e-mails promptly, and gives his opinions on questions frankly providing both sides of the issue at hand. Highly recommend him!

Local

I handle cases all over the State of Georgia. I am based out of Canton, Georgia, in Cherokee County, but I regularly handle cases all over the metro-Atlanta area and North Georgia. Over the years, I’ve met some of the finest attorneys Georgia has to offer. If you need someone closer to your part of the world, I’m happy to make the referral and introduction.

I believe in giving back to the community. I was raised in Cherokee County by a community that cared for one another. Giving back to that community is essential. I served on the boards of the Cherokee Arts Center and the Canton Main Street Program. I've served as the president of our local bar association. I am happy to volunteer my time speaking to students and serving as a community judge for  high-school senior project presentations. I previously served five years as a part-time Cherokee County Magistrate Judge. I served on the Canton City Council as the elected representative for Ward II (downtown Canton).

In 2023, I was appointed a full-time Magistrate Judge for Cherokee County.

I am proud to give a portion of every fee I earn back to groups in our local community that serve those in need. Have a cause I should know about? I’m all ears.
Together we can make great changes to our world.
